Spinal Cortisone Injections: What They Are, What to Expect & How Physiotherapy Can Help
Spinal cortisone injections are a common treatment for reducing inflammation and pain caused by conditions such as herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and facet joint arthritis. These injections deliver corticosteroids, a powerful anti-inflammatory medication, directly into the affected area of the spine to help manage pain and improve function.
At PhysioPM in Townsville, we have considerable experience working with patients who have received spinal cortisone injections as part of their pain management plan. While these injections can provide temporary relief, physiotherapy plays a crucial role alongside these therapies to help regain function and return to the activities you enjoy. Spinal cortisone injections are usually delivered by a Pain & Intervention specialist, such as Dr Jason Scott, however they can also be delivered by radiologists with additional training.
What to Expect from a Spinal Cortisone Injection
If you and your doctor decide that a spinal cortisone injection is right for you, here’s what you can expect:
1️⃣ Preparation – Your doctor may use imaging (such as fluoroscopy) to guide the injection for precise placement. You may need to stop certain medications before the procedure.
2️⃣ The Injection Process – A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, followed by the corticosteroid injection into the epidural space or facet joint, depending on your condition. The procedure typically takes 10–30 minutes.
3️⃣ After the Injection – Some patients experience immediate pain relief due to the local anaesthetic, but full effects from the cortisone can take a few days to a week. Relief may last anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
4️⃣ Possible Side Effects – Temporary side effects can include soreness at the injection site, mild headaches, or a temporary increase in pain before improvement. Serious complications are rare but should be discussed with your doctor.
How Physiotherapy Can Help After a Spinal Cortisone Injection
While spinal cortisone injections can be effective for pain relief, they do not address the root cause of your condition. This is where physiotherapy becomes essential. At PhysioPM in Townsville, we create individualised treatment plans to help you maximise the benefits of your injection and work toward long-term recovery.
🔹 Guided Exercises – Strengthening core muscles, improving posture, and enhancing spinal stability to reduce strain on the affected area.
🔹 Manual Therapy & Mobilisation – Hands-on techniques to improve spinal mobility and decrease muscle tension.
🔹 Education & Self-Management Strategies – Teaching you ergonomic adjustments, movement strategies, and lifestyle modifications to prevent pain from returning.
🔹 Gradual Return to Activity – Helping you safely reintroduce daily movements and physical activities without risking further injury.
